Arran Half Marathon Race Report 27/06/10

**Now with added VIDEO!**  …and added Dan Blog! **

Race Report 1 – by Garry Robertson:

EAC ‘on the road’ continued with the Arran Half Marathon. After the long Journey up to Skye two weeks ago, this was a relatively easy journey to a ‘local’ Island half. We headed off on the Saturday morning and 1 ½ hours after leaving Edinburgh, were at Ardrossan waiting for the 50 minute Ferry journey to Arran.

Since we were making a weekend of it, we decided not to take cars across to the Island, but to take bikes as our mode of transport. This meant cycling was also to be a big part of the weekend, it wasn’t all about running. We were staying at the far side of the Island at the Kinloch Hotel, (which just happened to be the race headquarters for the half marathon), so it did mean a longer cycle on the Saturday than perhaps ideal the day before the race, but we were there for an enjoyable weekend, not focussed entirely on getting PB’s in the race. Portobello 4 Mile Road Race 17/06/10 – Dan Clarkson

I’ve been excited about this race all week. Despite going hard on the track on Thursday, I was expecting a good performance from myself. I did get a bit concerned this morning when my hamstrings felt pretty tight, more than usual. I didn’t get a great night’s sleep last night either (I know, excuses excuses!) and was feeling that this afternoon, but still, I had high expectations of myself. I was asked on my walk down what time I was going for tonight. As I’ve never raced over this distance before, I had no idea what to aim for. I thought back to the mile reps I was kicking out in training just before the marathon, which were in the region of 5.20. I thought on this, and thought that if I averaged 5.30, I would come back with a time of 22 mins. (more…)

Skye 1/2 Marathon Weekend

A group from EAC enjoyed a superb weekend in Skye running the half marathon, see below for race write-ups from Dan and Garry…..

Report 1 – Dan Clarkson:

The day dawned well, and as we ventured down the stairs to the main bar of the Isles Inn for our breakfast, we could tell the day had a good feel about it. The members of team EAC who were there around the table all shared the quiet sense of anticipation one gets before a race. It’s an odd feeling – it’s not quite excitement, it’s not quite anxiety; it’s something similar to both, but completely different. (more…)

Dunking in Dunfermline

Working VERY hard now

If you thought that all road race Championship races were flat, fast affairs – think again! Although most certainly not in the league of the Skye half the day before, the Dunfermline race had its fair share of hills, twists & turns. Add in over 5 miles of cycle paths devoid of anyone but racers & a few folks manning a water station & it becomes clear that the revised Scottish Championship course is suited best to the mentally strong & internally motivated runner!

Here are accounts from Niamh Devlin & Jenny MacLean, plus results for your delectation. (more…)

Marathon King – London Marathon 22 April 1990

With this weeks buzz about the Edinburgh Marathon, thoughts turn to the EAC record holder for the Marathon: On the 20th Anniversary of his London Marathon win, Brian Aitken spoke to Allister Hutton.

Scotland’s Allister Hutton was a nearly man until he came through thick mist and rain like a Highland warrior from a damp Scottish moor, to win the 10th London marathon. Leading from 14 miles, the 35 year old pushed his body to the limit, to win the world’s greatest city marathon. (more…)

Seaside Rambles (Edinburgh 1/2M)

Women's Scottish 1/2M Podium

I’m going to start by saying something that a good number of you may well disagree with – Half Marathons go past very quickly. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that they zoom!

When my alarm went off at 5am & I peeked out the curtains, the sky was blue. By the time I’d finished breakfast just before 6, it was decidedly heavy looking, so I was anticipating a much cooler, damper day for the Scottish half marathon than it had been on the scorching Saturday. With this thought in mind I happily headed off out up the hill to catch the bus to the start. (more…)
