National Junior League (Northern Premier Division)

27 April 2008  -   National Junior League, Leeds
Team Edinburgh (Edinburgh AC, Lasswade & Corstorphine) had an excellent start to the NJAL at Leeds. We finished in 2nd place, less than 5 points behind Sale and well ahead of the other clubs. The team was probably the largest we have put out with over 40 athletes taking part. This strength showed at the end of the day in winning 3 out of the 4 relays. Our athletes’ results are listed below and full results are available on www.nationaljuniorathleticleague.co.uk

JSB Plumbing Forth Valley League Division I

17 April 2008, Pitreavie.

The first meeting of the league was held on a bright but bitterly cold evening with a strong East wind.
It was touch and go whether this match would take place as the Forth Road Bridge was closed and it did not open until 3:30pm.
We finished second to Pitreavie by 44.5 points, but we had a few spaces, we did not have an Under 11 Boys relay team, or any Under 15 Girls 1500m runners and only one girl in the Under 13 Girls 800m.

Under 11 Boys: The three boys who competed, performed well, all either finishing 1st or 2nd in there events with Josh Kerr, first ‘A’ String in the 100m and the 800m.
Under 11 Girls: The girls matched their boys counter parts, all finishing 1st or 2nd. Ellie McGinty matching her PB in the Long Jump with a distance of 3.72m.
Under 13 Boys:Good all round performances, with PB’s for Daniel Holligan and Luca Vita in the 100m and Guy Wardrop in the 800m. Completing their evening with a fine win in the Relay. Patrick Ryan was unwell so Callum Jones stood in for him in the 800m.
Under 13 Girls: Again matching the boys performances, with a PB’s for Kerry-Ann Hastings in the High Jump(1.30m), Katie Robertson in the 100m and High Jump, and for Emily Strathdee in the 800m. with the Girls also winning the Relay.
Under 15 Boys: PB’s all round Tom Holligan and Kieran Kivlin in the 100m and Shot Putt, Ross Blair and Max Ferguson-Hook in the 1500m. The four boys then combined to win the Relay.
Under 15 Girls: PB’s for Faye Kearny and Anna Bryans in the 100m with Caitlin O’Neill and Rachel Robertson close to their best in the Shot Putt.

The meeting went well with a few athletes competing for the first time and many PB’s.
We had to organise this meeting and our thanks go to Marjorie Cook, Lindy McGinty and Brian Nisbet for officiating and Gail Wilson for helping with the athletes.

Race report: Gala 10k

Over the last few years this race has been held in late June but this year saw it return to its original April slot. A cool day with sunny spells provided excellent racing conditions for the 100 plus seniors taking part. The start location has been shifted somewhat from previous years but otherwise the course remained largely the same with the bulk of the distance being made up in two laps following the line of the Gala Water. The absence of significant hills make this a fast and enjoyable course to run.

EAC fared well this year at Gala with Susan Ridely the first woman home in a time of 37.11. Roger Alsop finished third overall in the mens race, with a time of 33.52, and also claimed the prize for the first male vet. Graeme Brown and Jonathan Whitehead also represented the club finishing with times of 41.01 and 45.55 respectively.

Congratulations to Gala Harriers for another well organised race and particularly to Magnus Inglis (ex COEAC) in his debut as race organiser.

JSB Plumbing Forth Valley League Division II

17 April 2008, Livingston.

The first meeting of the league was held on a bright but bitterly cold evening with a strong East wind.
Because we have two teams in the Forth Valley League our team selection for this division can be limited.
For example we had no Under 11 boys, only three Under 11 Girls, three Under 15 Girls with no girl 1500m runners.

Under 11 Girls: The girls competed well with Sarah Wilson and Bonnita Murray competing for the first time.
Under 13 Boys: PB’s in the 800m for Michael Cameron and David Reed and in the High Jump for Michael Fleming.
Under 13 Girls: PB’s in the 800m for Melissa Marshall and Ellen Renton and in the High Jump for Kirsten Turnbull. The girls finshed their evening with a win in the Relay.
Under 15 Boys: PB in the 100m for Iain Martin, with Peter Cameron and Scott MacDougall competing in the 1500m for the first time.
Under 15 Girls: Coming  1st A in the Shot Putt, Kimberley Reed improved her PB by 1cm.

The meeting was short of Field Officials causing a 45 minute delay in the Shott Putt.

Thanks to Roddy McBlane, Pat Sinclair and  David Robertson for Officiating.
(Eric Fisher, Anna Sutherland)
