Rigg Race 2008

This week several club members competed in the Rigg Race at Balerno. The evening of the race was overcast with a cold wind which was thankfully behind the runners on the initial climb. Although the turnout for the club was down on previous years it proved to be a successful outing for EAC. Sarah Balancier had an excellent run, over a what is a tough course, to take the overall womens title in a time of 36.18. Garry Robertson also had a good run to finish in tenth place in a time of 35.26. Several other club members finished further back in the field including Graeme Brown and Willie Gallagher.

Club name

There still seem to be a number of race organisers, of both large and small races, who are using City Of Edinburgh AC as the club name. This could prove problematic if people are entering using the new club name or a mixture of old and new names are used.  Its worth double checking with organisers that they have Edinburgh Athletic Club as the club name in order to prevent any problems with team results.

Jumping Gill

I’ve started a blog at    http://jumpinggill.wordpress.com/   covering athletics in Scotland.

Any comments/suggestions welcome.

If you have information, a news item or suggestions for a topic you would like covered please e-mail me at: jumpinggill@blueyonder.co.uk

I would like to include details of what’s happening around the country – competition, squad or event, perhaps regional coaches would like to get in touch with anything planned for their region?

National Junior League 2nd Meeting

25 April 2008  -   National Junior League, Leeds – Northern Premier Division

Another good result, finishing a close second place behind Gateshead, puts Team Edinburgh at the top of the Northern Premier Division 2 points ahead of Sale after 2 matches. With two matches to go and the next one being at home (at Grangemouth on 27 June) we have a great opportunity to qualify for the National final by finishing in one of the top 2 places. Full results are available on www.nationaljuniorathleticleague.co.uk
(Originally we thought we had finished 2nd in the first match but after scrutiny of the results we were in fact 1st)

JSB Plumbing Forth Valley League

Division I, Match 2, Livingstone 15th May 2008

The second match in Division I was held at Livingston on a pleasant evening with very little wind, this makes a change from the usual rain or even snow.

We went into this match in second place behind Pitreavie.

There were many good performances throughout the programme, in most events PB’s were achieved, or athletes were competing in the event for the first time.

Bethany Valente was attempting to beat her own record in the Javelin but just missed out by 8cm.

Some of the notable improvements in performances were:
Kerry-Ann Hastings improved her Shot from 5.55m to 7.17m
Sean Stout improved his 800m time by 26 secs.
Ryan Ross and Cal McClellan improved their 200m times by 3 secs.
Laura Page cleared 4m in the long jump.

We won the match by 19 points; we are now level with Pitreavie with two more matches to go.

Thanks to Petra Biberback, George and Pat Sinclair and Jim Redmond for officiating.

Division II, Match 2, Pitreavie 15th May 2008

The second match in Division II was held at Pitreavie on a pleasant evening at with very little wind.

One problem we had was that there was no one at the meeting organising the Field events, so they were late in starting.

In most of the events our athletes were either trying them for the first time or it was their first time this season.

A couple notable improvements in performances were:
In the 800m Peter Cameron improved his time by 10 seconds
Jaclyn Marshall improved her time  by 9 seconds.

Although there were still no U/15 Girls in the 800m. we did not have as many gaps as the last time and this helped us attain  2nd place in the match, a big improvement on the previous one.

We are now in 4th place after two meetings.

Thanks to Sandy Cameron, Roddy McBlain and Elsie Morris  for officiating.
