A challenging 5k route in Arthurs Seat was designed and marked by last years Trophy Winner Kim . Marking the trail must have tired her out ( or maybe it was tough handicap) but we had a new winner in a very close race. As it is a handicap format the trophy goes to first club member to cross the line. Dermot was seen waving his club card in the pub . (more…)

The EAC ‘Power of 10′ spreadsheet has now been enhanced and a few more race times have been updated. (Last update 08/09/10). Thank you to everyone who has sent me their details. Thanks also go to Stuart Johnston who has helped out by automating the spreadsheet and making it far easier to update, and also for adding extra functionality including a useful sheet on Summary Stats which you will find interesting. A slightly early post this week with the weekend options, due to the fact we are staging the Robertson Handicap on Friday night! So we will start off with that! We are looking for a big turnout for this EAC handicap race, anyone can win, and everyone will enjoy it. There is also a night out planned for after the race at The Maltings/Montagu. Last night I attended a fascinating coaching seminar led by Don MacGregor. Don as many of you will know, was one of Scotland’s top marathon runners in the 60′s, 70′s and indeed 80′s and still holds marathon records even to this day!
As a bit of back ground information, Don is the most recent of only 5 Scots to have competed for Britain in an Olympic marathon. He finished 7th in Munich in 1972 just behind the pre-race favourite Ron Hill. He competed in 2 Commonwealth Games, 1970 in Edinburgh (8th) and Christchurch in 1974 (6th) where he set his best time of 2:14:15 which still places him 12th in the Scottish All-time list. During his career Don ran 51 marathons, 24 of which were under 2:20, including 3 gold and 6 silver medals at Scottish Championships between the years of 1965 and 1986. Don was Scottish 6 mile track champion in 1965 and 10 mile track champion in 1966 and represented Scotland at the World Cross Country Championships in 1967 and 1969. (more…)
It was always going to be interesting to see how my body reacted to over 300 miles of training in 3 weeks. I picked the Nairn Half Marathon on Saturday 22 August to put all that training to the test and to review my progress towards my Amsterdam marathon goal in October. I did, however, only give myself one week to taper and recover from all this training before the race and I always wondered if this would be enough.
The Nairn Half Marathon is part of the Nairn Highland Games, which was a great setting, as the first 300m of the race was a lap of the grass track, which was surrounded by about 250-350 people all cheering and shouting, which was inspiring and filled my legs with a little extra energy as we hit the roads.
