Only just caught up with this article by Doug Gillon in The Herald (http://www.theherald.co.uk/search/display.var.2502809.0.scottish_athletics_gags_critics.php) in which Bill Walker mentions a threat by Mr Wightman to revoke club funding, and an EAC meeting to discuss the threat and an appropriate response. Does anyone know if that meeting went ahead and if so what was the outcome ? Has the club issued any response to the 6 Year plan and SA’s apparent attempt to kill off track & field athletics for all but the very best ?

  • Garry says:

Steve, I thought one of the critisism of SA was that it was throwing resources at mass participation and it was the ‘coaches’ who wanted to concentrate on elite athletics?

Never good to see a restriction in free speach, but on the other hand, with the personal abuse that was getting aimed at SA and individuals within it, it was inevitable the SA forum would be removed. Even on the ‘new’ forums listed above, the anonymous attacks on individuals (on numerous topics), could do with being moderated.

To stimulate further debate re the 6 year plan: much was made about not publicising this, but it was first aired last November (see my post at the time) http://edinburghac.org.uk/?p=674#more-674 reporting from the coaching seminar where it was launched. As far as I am aware, despite SA asking for everyones comments at that point, they received very little feedback.

the club did send of a letter on the 6 yearplan ,the superteams and the inter-regional competitions, I do not have a copy but it was similar in content to the Pitreavie letter.

  • Garry says:

Is it possible to publish the letter on our site? It doesn’t look like SA have published the comments they received. In terms of being open, it would be nice if SA published how many clubs did reply and what was said.

  • Steve Wales says:

Derek, I take it the threats of cutting off club funding were just hot air ?

  • Derek says:

    Steve & Garry
as the letter was sent by our executive I will have to get permission before it can be put on the web site.
re club funding, the executive sent a letter asking for clarification of the telephone conversations, and we were informed that there was no change in our status regarding funding from Scottish Athletics.

If anyone is not sure what the six year plan is, you can down load the documents from the SA website at

    http://www.scottishathletics.org.uk/index.php?p=225&itemType=downloads&itemId=488

It’s fairly lenghthy, but don’t let that put you off. Well worth a read to get an idea of what is currently being planned for the future of scottish athletics.
