Howard wins the U20 decathlon with a Championship best performance. He was certainly in the zone. This takes him to 2nd in the UK. Well done Howard.

Howards words on how the event went…..

Day 1 went really well with PB’s in long jump and the 400. I was 70 points up on my day 1 score from English champs decathlon earlier in the year so I was feeling positive about putting a decent score together and was really happy to have jumped over 7m in the long jump twice for the first times. Bit disappointed with the 100m time and my legs felt like they had more than 1.90m in them all though the rain didn’t help, so there’s room for more improvement there.

In terms of day 2 I got off to a reasonable start with the hurdles which are usually a good points scorer for me. After an average discus I knew I was slightly down on Scottish record pace and knew I would need to perform well in the last 3 events (PV, jav and 1500). I PB’d by 30cm’s in the vault and it was back in sight. Moving onto jav I was nervous after having 3 no throws earlier in the year at the English champs decathlon but managed to throw a 4m PB in the first round. From there it was just a case of running a good even race in the 1500 and I managed to get a 3 second PB.

A big thanks to my coach Iain McEwan and my training group as well as Kevin and Kirsty McGuire for their coaching with my vault
