Inhaler use – change of registration

Important Notice

Brian Winning has brought to our attention that there is a change in the procedures for registering  the use of an inhaler.

Asthma Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUEs) Notice
From 1 January 2009, you were required to submit additional medical evidence to support your TUE application for the use of inhaled beta-2 agonists to treat asthma. These applications will be reviewed by the UK TUEC and if approved, exemptions will be provided for four years.

Where you may currently have approval to use your inhaled beta-2 agonist medication, UK Sport cannot guarantee that approval will be given again unless you have fulfilled all of the necessary medical requirements.

TUE applications are required for the following beta-2 agonists to treat asthma and/or its clinical variants (i.e. exercise-induced asthma, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and other clinical respiratory diseases):

 Formoterol, Salbutamol, Salmeterol and Terbutaline

Applications without evidence of asthma or its clinical variants will be returned without being reviewed.
Submission of the following documentation to UK Sport is required:

A complete and legible beta-2 agonist application form.
Lung function test results

Note: You only require one positive lung function test to confirm that you suffer from asthma or exercise induced asthma. You can undertake either a bronchodilator or bronchoprovocation test to meet these requirements. It is recommended you consult your GP or team doctor regarding which test would be best to complete by forwarding them the beta-2 agonist asthma guidance notes found below.

IT IS YOUR (the athlete) RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT TUE – ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE DOING HIGHER LEVEL COMPETITION
