Update: Andy’s funeral will be held at Warriston Crematorium, Lorimer Chapel, on Thursday, March 10, at 11 am. Family flowers only, but donations, if desired, to the LawCare Charity. There will be a wake at the Holiday Inn (Queensberry Road at junction with Craigleith Road) following the funeral. The funeral notification and online remembrance is here.
We received this sad information from Robert Laird, Andrew Laird’s brother.
Andy Laird was a very keen distance runner. He joined some 25 years ago from Aberdeen Uni where he trained as a lawyer . He trained at Saughton with Claude Jones’ group and represented EAC and City of Edinburgh at many cross country and road races. Andy strived in a group which included the likes of McClelland, Hamer, Spedding and Robertson to take the pace and make our counting team He helped at many club events and regularly turned out at our handicaps where he tried to get his name on the trophies! He contributed to the Grumpy old Runners website .
I’m afraid to say he died suddenly on Friday 26th Feb, when he was hit by a train on the East Coast line in East Lothian, he took his own life.
He leaves his wife Pamela and daughter Honor, who are both clearly in shock and mourning his tragic loss, and would ask that you respect their privacy.
There will be a funeral at Warriston Crematorium, for which we do not yet have a time or date, but is likely to be late next week, and will be notified in the Scotsman as soon as details are confirmed for anyone who wishes to pay their respects.
As a member of your club and being part of the wider Edinburgh running scene for the last 25 years, could you please share this information with fellow members many of whom I’m sure will have known Andrew.
