Hammerama

Bank of Scotland Hammer Grand Prix Final, Grangemouth, Saturday 11th September 2010

The day was hampered by blustery conditions and a few missing competitors who had opted to head to Derby with the Edinburgh or Glasgow buses.
Edinburgh interest was therefore in the female events with the club’s Susan McKelvie, Kimberley Reed and Kelly Bodley competing in the final competition of the series.

The senior women’s event was won by Susan McKelvie with a throw of  56.07 metres. Susan was also awarded the Paddy Ryan Memorial Trophy for Consistency of Performance throughout 2010. Susan just missed out on selection for the Commonwealth Games this season by only 14cm, but she did retain the Scottish Championship back in July.

In the U17 event, Kelly Bodley finished third with a throw of 39.06 metres, just below that elusive 40 metre mark.
The event was won by Kimberley Reed with a throw of  48.77 metres. Kimberley has had an excellent season and was given the Yuri Sedykh Crystal Trophy for Commitment, Performance and Potential which is the top award for female throwers at the Hammerama.
This is a great privelige and a terrifying prospect that this delicate object has to be looked after for a year and handed back intact. I’m not sure that teenage Hammer throwers and fine crystal is a good mix!

Edinburgh’s Max Stirling made his debut in the Under 15 boys event. Hopefully next year there will be more of the clubs male throwers involved.
