UKWAL Premier Div Match 2 2018

Warm sunny conditions greeted the 8 UK Women’s Premier League Teams, who descended on Grangemouth stadium for the 2nd fixture of this campaign, convened by Edinburgh Athletic Club.

This superbly organised match was a showcase for club athletics at its very best and spectators were treated to some exciting racing and high-class field events.

Edinburgh Athletic Club took full advantage of a “home” match to finish in second place behind Thames Valley Harriers. Once again, a number of U20 and under U23 athletes stepped up alongside more experienced athletes to achieve what was an excellent result against the top clubs on the UK.

There was an excellent A string win for Team Captain Sarah Warnock in the Long Jump and Emily Dudgeon had a busy day not only gaining maximum points in the 800 metres, contributing an excellent leg in the 4×400 but also running a cake stall for club funds.

The middle distance events were particularly strong for Edinburgh with Mhairi McLennan winning the A string 3000 and Rebecca Burns gaining maximum points in the B string event. In the 1500 there was an excellent win for U20 Eloise Walker in the 1500 in her debut for the senior team with team mate Zoe Bates winning the B event.Lauren Stoddart gained maximum points in the steeplechase. There was a B string victory in the Pole Vault from Gillian Cooke.

Although it was a “home” fixture there was travelling involved for everyone but Catriona Pennet deserves special mention.Faced with a nightmare 4 hour journey from Aberdeen as a result of road closures Catriona arrived just in time to pin on her numbers, gain valuable points in the 100 hurdles and then head back up the road for a family commitment. Dedication indeed!

It was lovely to see George Sinclair, former Head Coach and for many years Team Manager of the Senior Women’s Team enjoy the splendid afternoon of athletics.

Edinburgh Athletic Club are indebted to the Event sub group and their many helpers who worked incredibly hard in the build up to the event and on the day to ensure that this meeting was an outstanding success.  Thanks too to the other Scottish officials, who contributed to the success of the match and to the stadium staff.

Sitting in 4th place in the league the team are looking forward to the final fixture in Southampton on the 5th August.
